As the giant firm competition shifted from product markets to capital markets with the rise of shareholder value principle especially in the Anglo-Saxon economies management behaviour is driven by motives that are better explained by a cultural economy approach than classical product market-based strategy. In this presentation I will discuss the major themes of the book Strategy and Financialization by Froud, Johal, Leaver and Williams. This approach to strategy focuses on the significance of and relationship between narrative, numbers and performative. Shareholder return is in most cases an impossible project because of low product market profitability in most industries and conjunctural price movements in stock markets. Then story telling by managers and undisclosed business models become important strategic moves. Through case studies such as General Electric, Ford, GlaxoSmithClineBeecham and the works of other academics like Fligstein, Lazonick and O’Sullivan, Kadtler and Sperling from Financializaton at Work by Ertürk, Froud, Johal, Leaver and Williams the key concepts financialized strategy will be explained and discussed.
